Philosophy

I am an Indian born artist residing in Portland, Oregon. My formal ceramic journey started in 2015 when I moved to Portland,

My ceramic work is a combination of my experience as a former architect which taught me to focus on form, shape, and design, and my love of textile and fabric art. I give the classic embroidery, prints, weaves and paintings a new home on my ceramic pieces. I use hand building and wheel throwing techniques to create the form. I then decorate my ceramic pieces with a stylized design through painting, carving or piping.

This series of my work is called ‘Kalakriti – The Imagery Memoir’. In Sanskrit “kala” means art and “kriti” means creation, together they are the creation of art.

The textile industry is one of India’s oldest and biggest industries. Its origins trace back to the Indus Valley Civilization which flourished during 5000 BC. This ancient art of textiles uses cotton, silk, and wool to create magnificent weaves, designs, and embroidery which mesmerize everyone.

Every region in India has its own traditional techniques to decorate fabric. Textile is an art form which is used to create clothing and home décor. Growing up in and traveling around India, I could not resist falling in love with this art form. Everywhere I went, I would add to my collection of textiles by purchasing a saree, a scarf, or a dress. For me, every fabric has a story and thus my series is called The Imagery Memoir.

I enjoy researching the art form to get the essence and the flavor and then recreate my own workable designs and that is why I call them Inspirations and stylized designs.

A lot of love, patience and time goes into creating each piece.
